Letter & Book consists of exchanging ten letters over a period of three months between people who don’t know each other; participants are children, youth, and the elderly in situations of foster care, and people with learning disabilities who communicate with volunteers of all ages and social situations.
The goal is to encourage and give meaning to reading and writing, create meaningful bonds, and provide a variety of experiences resulting in meeting people with different kinds of lives. In these letters, each person reveals himself, at his or her own pace, writing about age, interests, and projects, dreams and frustrations, diminishing what at the beginning was considered unequal and unknown.
After the letter exchange period, the pen pals finally meet at the Exchange Party. The volunteers give the gift of a book to their pen pals and the participants give a gift made by hand.
The “book gift” is chosen by the volunteers according to what they have learned about their pen pals, and comes with a dedication, which makes it unique and non-transferable. The same happens with the handcrafted presents, which are made by participants with commitment, creativity, and affection.
During the three months, an album of the exchanged letters is created, which is given to each participant at the end of the program as a keepsake.
Núcleo Morungaba has been offering Letter & Book since 2012. Each semester a universe of new relationships to be explored and deepened opens up, allowing those involved to share often unknown situations.
